Security guards versus security officers

There are many ways in which security guards and security officers differ from each other, even though both are responsible for ensuring safety. Roles and responsibilities remain the same for both designations. Hierarchy and authority in job roles are what make the difference, however. To begin with, let’s distinguish between a security guard and a security officer.

What is the role of a security guard?

A security guard typically works under a security officer with a lower rank. For a smooth operation, they collaborate with officers and work under their supervision. They are not usually required to go through rigorous training, although this depends entirely on their employer.

Analyzing and reporting

A There should be a security officer reporting to the security guard. Security officers do not report to security guards since they are ranked higher in the organizational hierarchy.

A training program

In order for the security system to function properly, security officers must undergo rigorous training. Guards are expected to perform only tasks related to their designations, so they need no extensive training. In addition, a security guard responsible for maintaining a log book at the entrance of a facility does not require initiation into other security departments. To have a complete understanding of the security system at their fingertips, security officers must undergo training.

Managing operations

In order to supervise the security system, security officers must move from one location to another. There is usually one security guard at a location (if mobile guards are not present). Frisking guards, for example, should be stationed in one place. To ensure that everything is in order with the security system, security officers must roam around the facility. A CCTV camera’s functionality could be tested, or tailgating or unauthorized entry could be noted.
